CONDUCTOR BIO

Jacob Scherr

Praised for his versatility, musicality, and community involvement, Jacob Scherr is recognized as one of the most dynamic young conductors and educators on the podium today. A passionate teacher, Jacob Scherr has been the director of bands and orchestras at Mount Vernon High School since the fall of 2009. His ensembles have performed for the KPLU School of Jazz Recording Projects, several Washington Music Educators Conferences, and the MVHS Wind Ensemble made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2017, performing at the National Band and Orchestra Festival. Mr. Scherr immensely enjoys his involvement with music organizations, having given presentations at WMEA, NAfME-NW, and NAMM conferences. In 2017 Mr. Scherr completed his term as President of the San Juan Music Educators Association.

Mr. Scherr graduated with a degree in Music Education from Western Washington University in 2009 and later graduated with his Master’s in Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University. In 2008, Mr. Scherr and Brad Hendry (Sedro-Woolley High School Band Director) co-founded the Whatcom Wind Ensemble, a community band located in Bellingham, Washington. In 2022, Mr. Scherr served as Visiting Director of Bands at Western Washington University, conducting the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and teaching advanced conducting courses.

Jacob also serves as the music director for the prestigious Washington Wind Symphony. He is overjoyed with his role as assistant conductor with Skagit Symphony and is passionate about music education for our youth in the Skagit Valley. Jacob Scherr lives in Mount Vernon, WA with his wife, Annie, and their two children, Brennan and Lydia.
